Project snapshot

Location: Bana, Lakang Sub-County, Amuru District (Northern Uganda)

Priority facilities: Children’s ward, maternity ward, outpatient + emergency unit

Purpose: Reduce preventable deaths by bringing essential services closer to rural families.

Archdiocese of Gulu • Northern Uganda

Northern Uganda continues to carry the effects of the LRA insurgency—leaving communities with under-resourced health systems, long travel distances for care, and limited emergency services.

Why This Hospital Is Needed

Many families face preventable illness and loss due to barriers in access. This hospital aims to reduce avoidable deaths and strengthen essential services close to home.

What this hospital will address

  • Reduce preventable maternal and child deaths through skilled maternity and pediatric care.
  • Provide lifesaving access to essential services for rural communities facing long travel distances and high costs.
  • Strengthen diagnosis, treatment, and prevention for malaria, waterborne illnesses, and respiratory infections.
  • Support ongoing management of non-communicable diseases such as hypertension and diabetes.

Public health impact

  • Serve as a hub for immunization, education, and outreach to improve health literacy.
  • Provide emergency medical services including trauma and accident care where services are limited.
  • Support healthier living through prevention-focused community engagement.

Project Location

The hospital will be located in Bana, Lakang Sub-County, Amuru District. Lakang Sub-County has three parishes (Bana, Atoro, Kololo) and currently has no government or private health facilities.

Amuru District context

Amuru District is bordered by South Sudan (north), Gulu District (east), Lamwo (northeast), Nwoya (south), Adjumani (northwest), and Arua (west). Kilak South includes sub-counties such as Lamogi, Guru-guru, Amuru, Amuru Town Council, Layima, and Lakang.

Initial Priorities

To operationalize this vision, the following are urgently needed:

Build the foundation

  • Purchase of suitable land for construction
  • Construction of a children’s ward
  • Construction of a maternity ward

Core services

  • Construction of outpatient department
  • Construction of emergency unit

Prayer for the Success of the Hospital

God Our Creator and Redeemer,

We thank you for the gift of your Son Jesus Christ whom you sent into this world to save us from spiritual, physical, mental sicknesses and all forms of enslavement.

Before his ascension back to heaven, Jesus in turn commissioned his apostles to go out into the whole world to preach, “heal the sick and cleanse the lepers” (Matthew 10:8).

Inspired by Jesus’ example of charity, we humbly ask you to bless our intentions, our vision and mission for the success of the construction of a hospital which we dedicate to Saints Cosmas and Damian.

Send your Holy Spirit to inspire and touch the hearts of men and women of good will to join in this mission by their prayers and charity for the success of the project. May this hospital be a mark of your eternal love and grace for the people of Northern Uganda, for Uganda as a nation, for Africa, and the world. We pray through the intercessions of Saints Cosmas and Damian. Amen.
Imprimatur: + Raphael p’Mony Wokorach, MCCJ — Archbishop of Gulu
